New York Fashion Week FW17 | My Favorite Trends

Between New York Fashion Week coinciding with a winter storm and an impromptu break from school, I've had a lot of time to click through all the collections. With some great new perspectives, old traditions and the debut of Raf Simons for Calvin Klein there was also a lot of trends to enjoy. Here are my favorites: 

New York Fashion Week S/S17

New York Fashion Week seemed quite bright and fun this year. This may be due to the longevity of the warm weather we're having (I mean seriously it's practically October and still 80!) Or maybe  everyone just wanted to take a break from being serious (something a college senior can very much appreciate) Either way, I found some great trends to fuel my spring shopping come March. Here are some of my favorites: 

Proenza Schouler // Delpozo // Zac Posen 

Fun Proportions: I always feel a little lost trying to find interesting tops to wear. It's the easiest piece to get into a bit of a rut with, but bubble sleeves are to the rescue. The change is simple, but has an immediate impact in making something more unique. The Delpozo collection had a plethora of odd proportions in all their pieces as well, stretching the boundaries of what I'd wear a little further. 

Zimmermann  // Cynthia Rowley // Erin Fetherston 

PJ pants: Once I discover the secret of how to wear loose pants when you're short, I'll be hopping into pajama style pants. Being chic and comfy is always my goal. 

Prabal Gurung // Monse // Zimmermann 

Dresses: My love for dresses has obviously not diminished, though I am surprised with the amount of ruffles this season. I don't think I'll don a full sequined, 80s frock anytime soon, but a touch of hankerchief hem here and ruffle cape there I can do. 

Overall

I think this is the third time I've picked Marissa Webb's show as an overall favorite of the week. It always feels like I could wear the entire collection every season. It's quite familiar, but still has new elements to try out. She also encourages my green jacket obsession, so she'll always be a favorite. 

J. Crew was definitely the surprise of the week. I loved the use of non-models, and they had a great bit of fun dashed into their classic, preppy style. I was more drawn to the beige looks because the pink was a tad too bright for me, and I'm getting little sick of blue, but everything looked lovely and wearable. The show was also a clear indication that ruffles are going to everywhere very soon. 

A look at Eva Chen's Instagram story and a quick peek at Vogue's review was all it took to put Altuzarra at the top of my list. The collection was so bright and interesting it makes me want to never wear black again.  You can't avoid the positivity of the collection. I also enjoyed how the structure of the clothes was still clean and simple. Joseph Altuzarra told Vogue Runway, "I wanted something that felt happy, joyous, flirty, and fun." I instantly got those feelings seeing the collection and those are the best kind of clothes.

New York Fashion Week FW16

NYFW was cold as ever this February, but still managed to serve up some great inspiration for when fall rolls around once again. Here are some of my favorites: 

Fuzzy: My love for my TopShop coat has extended to everything fuzzy. Sweaters, vest, coats, doesn't matter as long as it's cosy.

Winter floral: Winter florals aren't a new idea, but I love how more leaves and vines are being incorporated into these prints. The fact that Jason Wu's blooms also looks like their smeared and dripping is a great twist to a floral print as well. 

Cynthia Rowley, Jason Wu, Alice and Olivia 

Sweaters: Despite how much I wish and hope, I'll always have to deal with a harsh winter so sweaters are a staple. Oversized sweaters seemed to rule the runway this season. I particularly love how Marc Jacobs managed to make dollies sinister looking. 

Marc Jacobs, Rag & Bone, Lacoste

Atmosphere: I love a good theme and fashion week always delivers some great ones. Coach delivered on all things school themed. If only I was actually that stylish in high school. Opening Ceremony focused on the future rather than the past. Some of the looks seemed like they came straight out of Zenon, but I love how daring the choices were. Plus, there were some great elements like this oil slick colored utility jacket. Thom Browne opted for victorian central park in the winter and though I'm yearning for spring it looked incredible and quite mysterious. 

Overall 

The Creatures of Comfort show had a lot of retail appeal and it spoke to me instantly. I love the relaxed approach to typical work wear. The slouchy fit of the velvet suits makes the look more modern than the 70s version. Plus they added a nice 70s twist to some staples I love like button ups and high waisted pants. 

I consistently love the Marissa Webb shows. This one in particular felt like she took everything that was already in my closet and made it better. I genuinely love everything from the utilitarian army jacket to the additions of drawstrings and frayed edges to a suit. The pops of mustard yellow are also a nice touch and a nod to the 70s trend were all still obsessed with.

NYFW SS16

I have spent a lot of time putting this post together this season. Part of it was just me being very busy this semester, and part of it was because I decide to focus less on trends and just styles and details that I really loved the minute I saw the outfit. That effort led me to wanting to include so many looks and designers in to the post, so this post contains a lot of spring inspiration for you. If you want to step away from the shroud of fall for a moment continue on.

Military Pockets

Diane Von Furstenberg and Jason Wu

I have a new J. Crew jacket that has these square, military inspired pockets. I love them and can see myself enjoying them in a more spring appropriate vest and shorts. 

Pastels

I've been wearing a ton of pink and blue pastels lately, so when I saw the Rachel Antonoff presentation I was drooling. It can get rather cutesy, but if I spent the whole of spring in her clothes I wouldn't be upset. 

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs

I'm a fan a musicals and plays and an even bigger fan of movies. One memorable free day I watched three movies and was completely content. So the Ziegfeld theatre being the venue and the inspiration for Jacob's show got me very jealous that I wasn't able to see it in person. As for the clothes, I loved the 50's school wear including the varsity jackets, sweaters, and the layering. It's a style I've always gravitated towards, and it can easily be adapted to cold and hot weather. 

Girly, Flowing, 70's Stuff*

*at this point I apparently gave up on properly naming things and just oogled all the feminine springtime goodness 

Only Carolina Herrera could make me want to wear head to toe pink. Her "pleats" were also super interesting and on the more demure side of sexy. 

Derek Lam has all the bell sleeve inspiration that I could ever want in the world. Plus I can't resist good layering.

Jill Stuart really dipped into the 70's trend. Everything made me want to dress (and maybe just a little bit act) like Jackie from That 70's Show. You have to admit the girl had style. 

Overalls

There's always a few shows where I just want the entire collection in my closet. 

3.1 Phillip Lim

The 3.1 Phillip Lim show spoke to all my classic loves. Button front inspired tops, interesting stripes, dresses, and overall a very simple look. Something new was an unexpected love of the mix of patterns. It's not something I've ever tried myself, but in a blue and green color palette I might just give it a go.

Creatures of the Wind 

On a much more bold note Creatures of the Wind mixed patterns and colors that I only hope to achieve some day. The blue flower print is lovely and almost makes me wish for spring sooner (unlikely to actually happen.) It also gave me some inspiration for styling my sweater vest and military inspired jacket. 

Rag & Bone 

There are always shows that I feel are way cooler than I could ever pull off. This time around it was Rag & Bone. Everything looked interesting, but still in the realm of trendy. Not a huge excitement, but the comfort of all the pieces is rather enticing. I may not be cool, but I could lounge around in all those knits and race car jumpsuits any day.

New York Fashion Week SS 2015

I took a quick break from blogging to get adjusted to school, but I'm back and sharing my favorite trends and looks from New York Fashion Week. So here we go: 

Button-up Shirts

A button-up shirt was my starting point for re-building my wardrobe. It was the one thing that I absolutely wanted to be a cornerstone in my personal style. I enjoy the idea of making the usually strict shirt more cozy and relaxed, but a classic outfit is always good as well.

Capes

Capes seem to be appearing more often (maybe because of the famous Lupita dress?) Either way I'm for it, it's a more formal, old school silhouette that I appreciate. I've already spotted some on Nasty Gal.

Crop tops and skirts

Some people may be getting tired of this trend, but I'm still in love with it. The shapes and ease it can create are amazing. More crop tops and skirts will be piling into my closet this spring for sure. 

Dresses

As I've mentioned before, I'm starting to become more of a dress girl, so I zoned in on them at each show. I love the Zimmermann halter dress, because the metallic color looks so nice, and I was really drawn to that 90's style neckline. The Erin Featherston dress is just perfect, cute, and not over the top at all. Lastly, the Marissa Webb piece is effortless (easy, breezy, beautiful). Just what I want. 

Overall 

I'm so indecisive sometimes I don't know why I bother trying to pick one collection as my sole inspiration for the season. Here's three.

Band of Outsiders 

Band of Outsiders' collection was so relaxed without compromising any structure the pieces had. I could easily picture myself in all of the outfits (minus the hats though). 

Karen Walker 

I loved Walker's show because it made me want to wear more colors and patterns, and that's a big feat. I think the more 70's vibe of the clothes made them seem more approachable to me. 

Alice + Olivia 

The Alice + Olivia presentation didn't really spark any new trends or ideas that haven't been brought forth before, but that didn't really matter because what was presented was everything I love. A major portion was solely black and white and the clothes reminded me I don't have to grow up so fast. I should still enjoy dressing up just to look cute or adorable. It's okay not to want to wear crazy colors or traditionally clashing patterns. That's just not my thing.
